Is Twitter the OCD of Facebook Status?

Interesting question as a caption to a recent photo from @iamsin's Flickr account

Biz Stone says "commercial usage of Twitter has taken off and really started growing"

Biz Stone, the co-founder of Twitter answered some questions from Rafe Needleman of CNET's Webware about how Twitter is currently performing, some interesting points arose and I think since the recent changes with Jack Dorsey and Evan Williams occured this provided a pinnacle moment to really ask some important questions of the Twitter team.

One thing I just wanted to point out quickly was CNET's analogy of why Jack and Evan swapped roles, Caroline Mccarthy of CNET said the translation was that it was " time to get real", which was slightly harsh. Jack Dorsey did some fantastic work for the team whilst being CEO of Twitter, Evan even put this in his blog post about the move saying that "Jack took Twitter through an order of magnitude of growth and two major rounds of financing, while safely navigating some very rocky waters that would have taken even more experienced leaders down with the ship.".

Even despite various issues, that the Twitter community acknowledged simply weren't acceptable such as no SMS updates outside of the US, Jack did create a fantastically dynamic product which really got people communicating in a new way and he should be commended for that. I simply believe this change was a positive one, although we are yet to see what happens.

The one key point I wanted to address from this email interview was how Twitter co-founder Biz Stone said that "We've watched with interest as commercial usage of Twitter has taken off and really started growing. We think there are some very interesting opportunities so we're modeling some scenarios there as well as other opportunities."

Now, I am intrigued to know what commercial uses this may be, and if there is such great commercial usage will it turn them a profit or revenue at all! I mean, it's been great to see rounds of financing going so well for the team, but where is the money for them? I won't try sounding like a resounding broken record in this article because I would simply be echoing much of what has already been written recently, here is an article from ReadwriteWeb on the matter that is worth a look at:

http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/help_twitter_find_a_revenue_model.php

There has even been some thorough discussion over at Webmasterworld about it:

http://www.webmasterworld.com/community_building/3725426.htm

In my opinion I expect we could see a corporate or premium version of Twitter coming through, something that will beat Yammer.com, recent Techcrunch 50 winner to a pulp, if Twitter was to implement this feature correctly with their audience I reckon they could make profit pretty rapidly.

I get the sense that overall from this interview Biz Stone did with Rafe Needleman, that he is quietly optimistic but has a very clear "never say never" attitude to the future of the company, which in the current climate will prove vital to Twitter staying afloat, but how long do you think Twitter will leave it until they "turn on a business model that produces revenues"?

Why a "Facebook Music Store" Wouldn't work!

Here is the post from Eweek.com about Facebook possibly bringing out a Myspace Music Rival:

I believe there a couple of reasons this won't work and how Facebook is simply playing catchup with this idea of social music streaming:

Seesmic.com loses 7 people from the team: Is there a light at the end of this tunnel yet?

Seesmic.com, a site dedicated to online video conversations has today announced that they will be cutting 7 positions in the company. Loic Le Meur said on his blog that "It's never easy to address topics like this but as a company we have felt the need to get Seesmic ready for what most are anticipating to be a bleak economic outlook for the considerable time going forward." The video below just echoes how many companies in the Web world are feeling during these tough times, with EBay also becoming the latest casualty of the crisis on Tuesday, shedding its workforce by 10%:

Mark Zuckerberg appears to shine at FOWA!

Well, everyone was very eager to pass comment on Zuckerberg back at South By Southwest back in March of this year, but it seemed he earned himself a huge reprieve today at the FOWA Conference in London, with this visit being heralded as Zuckerberg's first visit to London in 10 years, here is a quick snap taken by @hepp:

InsideFacebook.com made a great selection of the highlights
of Zuckerberg's talk, the particular ones I was looking forward to the most from that list were:

  • "Facebook’s implementation of things such as the Platform APIs and FBML" for more open implementation of the platform, instead of being a closed system.
  • Zuckerberg's further agreement that if he "would build Facebook (or any web application) the same today as he did four years ago he said no, especially given advances in cloud computing and the availability of other sites-as-platforms."
  • And finally that Zuckerberg "fixes bugs from time-to-time as a way to keep in touch with how the site is being developed and abstracted."
His general message of enabling people to share is very encouraging, and the added benefit of being more open will pay divends in rivalling Google's Open Social Initiative, but will Facebook truly write a new page in the Facebook History, or will the platform stay locked up and implement further into Microsoft's development in Windows Live!

Here's what you guys were saying on Twitter:
